MUSIC FOR THE QUEEN OF SCOTS Flautadors; Corrina Silvester (perc) DEUX-ELLES 1144 (62:04)

Selections by ANON, ARBEAU, TETRE, CERTON, GHIZEGHEM, AGRICOLA, GARDANE, SERMISY, JOHNSON, PEEBLES, GOUDIMEL, HUME, BLACK, LAUDER, FETHY

Some recorder ensembles have international reputations, and an extensive back catalog of CDs, such as the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet, Flautendo Köln, and the Flanders Recorder Quartet. I find that not to be the case with Read more the ensemble on this disc. Presumably it’s because I’m unfamiliar with its U.K. touring scene or the couple of previous releases it has issued on Dutton and Deux-Elles, but the Flautadors is a new name to me. It formed in 1997, and has followed the usual course of action for such groups, embracing a broad range of music spanning the late medieval to modern times. As usual, too, it adds the occasional improvisations of a percussionist—in this case, Corrina Silvester, who tastefully emphasizes rhythms without drawing attention away from the wind textures.

The CD purports to illustrate Mary I of Scotland’s life from beginning to end, with music that is appropriate according to its time, location, or emotional content. Like most similar programs, it ends up having little to do with the actual music being performed. However, it is a useful hook upon which to fasten an audience’s attention, while performing a range of attractive pieces drawn largely from French and Scottish sources in the late 16th century. Some are well known, such as Certon’s La, la, la je ne l’ose dire , Hume’s A French Jigg, Prince Edward’s Paven (probably best remembered from Poulenc’s adaptation in his Suite française ), and De tous biens playne (two versions out of many of this popular work here, by Agricola and Hayne van Ghizeghem). Others are rarely heard if at all, at least in part because they are listed in manuscripts without composer attributions—such as the curiously instrumental-sounding Sanctus from the Carver Choirbook, or the charming Ane lesson upon the First Psalme , found in the Edinburgh Sang Schule’s theory book.

The Flautadors’ performances are expert, on a fine set of instruments made by Thomas Prescott, based on 16th-century recorders currently in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum. Excellent sound is provided, close and crisp, with none of the cathedral reverberation that all too often smothers such groups. If you enjoy recorder consorts in music of this period, here’s a fine sample to add to your collection.
