Neither in StereoMarch 25, 2014By Charles W. (Austin, TX)See All My Reviews"The listing has the Tchaikovsky listed as Stereo. Mengelberg's last recordings were made in the mid 1940's long before the stereo era began so the recording cannot be in stereo. I did not listen to these specific disks but I have listened to both works in other versions and the are great performances....especially the Tchaikovsky. Mengelberg's way with Tchaikovsky would be considered very wayward today....very similar to the way Stokowski or Nikish would have conducted. Lots of rubato and portamento and changes of tempo and many augmentations of the original score...In Tchaikovsky is was wonderful....In Bach not so much. His Bach is severely romanticized and tempos are measured and pulled out of shape. Still,it was a landmark recoding for the 1930's The orchestral virtuosity is from a bygone era and not to be heard today. There were no limits to rehearsal time and few unions and Mengelberg was a virtual dictator who ran the orchestra from 1895 to the end of WWII when he was fired and exiled to Switzerland for being a Nazi collaborator. I have various copies of these performances and they vary from fairly decent to poor. I cannot speak for the above disks as I have not heard these particular transfers."Report Abuse
