Johan Hye-Knudsen was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, his favorite instrument being the cello. He was the conductor of the Scala Teatret in Copenhagen and then performed as a cellist in the Royal Theatre orchestra from 1925 to 1926, after which he became the assistant conductor. He left this position in the spring of 1930. He was also conductor of Students-Sångföreningen (1927-46) and composed a symphony and some chamber Read more music pieces. As a conductor he championed Scandinavian music as well as other European composers and he had the rare gift of making less well-known works sound as important as the famous ones. His stereo recording with the Royal Danish Orchestra of the Symphony No. 1 of Niels Gade, on the old Turnabout label is particularly noteworthy for bringing out rich, warm Romantic tone colours and stirring melodic lyricism.
