Notes and Editorial Reviews

Contemporary sources make it clear that, as a pianist, Mendelssohn was both powerful and poetic. His music making was clear and ingenuous, while at the same time he was able to draw orchestral effects from his piano, even though the instruments of the time were quite limited. The violinist Joseph Joachim heard Mendelssohn play: "His wonderful staccato was extraordinarily fresh and lively. The interpretation had a fire where one feared he might run out of control, but he never did, as he combined it with the greatest sensitivity. Clara Schumann also counted the experience of hearing her colleague play among the greatest of her life. Mendelssohn was fundamentally a classicist and disliked the superficial virtuosity that was so popular in his Read more day. His music is dynamic, sometimes dramatic, often warm and charming, but never excessive or bombastic. The piano concerti are excellent examples. Number one in G minor was completed when he was 22 - but it was actually by no means his first. He had already composed one at the age of 13, following it a year later with the concerto for piano and violin recorded here and one for two pianos. He followed these with yet another, all by the age of fifteen. Read less
