Notes and Editorial Reviews

There is something truly evocative about a brass quintet. Maybe it's the fact they're wind instruments of the brass family, whose resolute, shiny-metallic tones have been used to herald all kinds of events throughout history. The "event" to which the True North Brass escorts the listener is the music of their native Canada. This charming collection of Canadian classical and folk (with a dab of pop) spans two or so centuries. From the pen of Sir Ernest MacMillan come two Baroque-charged yet Copland-esque French Canadian airs (written in the 1920s!). Then to the patriotic folk tune 'Red River Valley' and the wry Ellington-like swaggering blues of the Brass' Alastair Kay composition 'True North Blues.' 'Three Miniatures' by Jim McGrath was Read more commissioned by the TNB-this is the most modern piece here, full of cinematic and hymn-like swelling melodies and amiably angular passages. The TNB, with their sterling technique (though never merely for its own sake) is superbly balanced by their geniality and affection for the music, providing a mini-travelogue of The Canadian Experience.
