Notes and Editorial Reviews

Among the chamber orchestral works of Joseph Haydn, these are relatively little known - his eight Nocturnes and the six Scherzandi are lovely unassuming but well balanced pieces ideal for both concert hall and salon.

“The raw, distinctly rustic nature of the music [in the Notturnos] presents a vivid picture of youthful high spirits ... while [the Jessop Ensemble’s performance] has a strongly homespun feel to it, this approach undeniably underlines the essential joviality of this music. [In the Scherzandi] there are plenty of special moments ... impressive collective virtuosity from these young players, all of which is delivered with complete authority.” – Marc Rochester (International Record Review)

Unknown Haydn for the Haydn Lover June 26, 2013 By Felipe E. (Oakland, CA) See All My Reviews "I was so pleased when I saw this title available.I have been a Haydn fanatic for many years and have explored the majority of his output over the years, but I never had the option to hear these works first hand on another recording before. The Scherzandi are for sure the most unknown, for they are "little symphonies" that Haydn wrote early on in his employment at Esterhazy. They are beautiful, well balanced works from the composers workshop that show many signs of greatness to come. The Notturni,by contrast, come from the composer`s later period before his famous trip to London, where he was to write his most famous "London"symphonies. They are great works for different combinations of wind instruments, that show a variety of moods, styles and expression. The Jessop haydn Ensemble and Trinity Haydn Ensemble are top rate musicians with a delicate understanding of not only Haydn and his compositional style, but of 18th century musical practices as well.I recommend this album, not only for those who are interested in Haydn`s early of later compositions, but also for the time period.A must have in your Haydn library!"
