Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Jesper Koch (b. 1967)...finds his favorite source of inspiration, we are told, in Lewis G. Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, both of which he draws upon for Memory of a Summer Day, Aria Interrupted (2002). All of the works on this disc are modern in idiom, but symphonic in sweep and richly Romantic in gesture and expression. In this, Koch may be compared to a composer like Pçteris Vasks. There is some striking music here. In Memoriam, subtitled “Passacaglia for Orchestra” is a masterful 16-and-a-half-minute work that rises to an emotionally devastating climax and sinks to a tragic denouement. Alice under Summer Skies (1997), subtitled “Summer Pastorale for Read more Chamber Orchestra” follows a classical A-B-A form, and contains a ravishing solo part for English horn, played here by Mats Hedelius. Perhaps it’s the semi-autoerotic imagery of Carroll’s white rabbit and the trombone “opening the gate to the world of fantasy” that suggested to me a parallel with Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun, for Alice under Skies is very much an orchestral prelude cum tone poem that inhabits a similar dreamlike state of semiconsciousness. Memory of a Summer Day is in a slightly more avant-garde style, but not by much, and its eccentric pointillism strikes me as perfect for Carroll’s eccentric verses. Susanne Elmark is gifted with a beautiful soprano voice, and her technical precision in this exceptionally tricky music is quite impressive. The symphonic fantasy, Earth My Likeness (2000–01), like In Memoriam, is another large orchestral canvas, more modern in its language, and more atmospheric, but still very accessible. This whole program, from beginning to end, is very rewarding and highly recommended."
