Cortona and Florence, and several Gregorian chants are included, one of them originating at a much later period, the 19th century of Dom Paul Jausions, the monk of Solesmes. The Dufay piece is the first recording of
Salve sancte pater
, an antiphon in one of the more neglected areas of the Dufay catalog. The Ciconia motet is
Ut te per omnes
, recorded in Paul van Nevel’s complete works. The other named composers are Franciscan friars (except Aliseda), and five tracks are instrumental. Porta’s
Voce mea
was on a Gloriae Dei Cantores disc (19:6).
Sia laudato San Francesco
from the Cortona source is on La Reverdie’s disc (23: 6), while it also appeared earlier with
Laudar vollio
on a Musical Heritage Society LP.
The singers are very accomplished, notably a basso profundo, Mark Dietrich, who would be welcome in any vocal ensemble. Sramek sings tenor in the group. The ensemble, based in Saint Paul, Minn., has issued one disc after another in a variety of idioms. The alternation of forms and styles in this program makes an interesting disc, an appealing collection of works focused on the saint that G. K. Chesterton admired so much that he embraced his church and immediately wrote his biography.
