Martha Shaw has shaped the sweet voices of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir into a superbly blended instrument. The sound is pleasing, the phrasing graceful, the diction clear. Shaw, the group’s founder, writes in the liner notes that the singers inspire her. I would like to add that they inspire me, also.

One always wishes when hearing a superior ensemble such as this that the repertoire were of equally high caliber. So often children’s choirs seem to program only a small amount of the great works and commission or obtain at clinics and conferences pieces that are respectably crafted, but not really memorable. These gifted choir members deserve to know and to sing the best—the very best—such as Britten and Vivaldi. When great works do not dominate the repertoire, style often suffers, for example the style of Antonio Vivaldi. Italian speech is highly inflected, and, consequently, the phrasing of Vivaldi’s music is highly inflected as well. However, the children sing the Latin text with the more even nuances of our English language. Britten’s style is also at issue, and suffers to a degree from understatement. His musical suggestions must be scrupulously carried out in order to have frail young voices sing con fuoco without strain. The accents and tenutos must be well defined; the difference between forte and fortissimo must be clear; the crescendos must be carried out to the cutoff. Details such as these reveal the emotional power of his work, a power unmatched by most of the other selections on this disc.

One of the songs however, The Truth is Great, stands out in my memory. Its modesty and candor is very disarming. It is also disarming to hear children sing so beautifully and sincerely about things, important things, such as the truth, knowing that they are just beginning their search for it.

Judy Mason is the ensemble’s able accompanist.
