Notes and Editorial Reviews

It all began in the late 1800s. Hotel lounges and exhibition halls bedecked with palms and aspidistras were home to the palm court orchestras and small ensembles, usually piano, violin and cello. Many danced the old-fashioned paces, waltzing to Strauss or two-stepping to the sounds of other joyful Viennese melodies. The music came from the music halls of London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, New York. Over time, rhythms and melodies were arranged to be suitable to the tastes of the very fashionable, a departure from their shocking and racy origins: the saloons and coffee houses of the workers who found joy in the light-hearted expressions of the so-called trivialmusik. Prior to the advent of recording, film, and radio, live music was played Read more everywhere and many who heard it increasingly wanted light music rather than the serious presentations of the ìartî composers and musicians. This new trivialmusik, easy to understand and often explained by their titles, had both family and community audiences. It was supported by the Victorian insistence on music ñ singing, playing, and dancing ñ as an educational obligation, important to a newly independent and more wealthy society. Many ìseriousî 19th century ñ and even earlier ñ musicians flirted with arrangements, or found their music re-arranged by others to meet the growing demands of the newly affluent populations whose musical tastes were no longer dictated by those of the nobility and the church. The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, England, is a luxury conference hotel today, maintaining the tradition of old world hospitality and charm. Its namesake, The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, offers an opportunity to go ìback to the time of horse drawn carriages, afternoon tea, and croquet on an endless lawn. An era of dining to chamber music and dancing the evening away. Among the pieces you will recognize on this CD are arrangements of more profound works though some are by little known composers who specialized in Palm Court music of the day. The easy-listening of the time could be gentle and reminiscent, rhythmic and energetic or melodic and song-like, sentimental and joyous. Read less
