Notes and Editorial Reviews

Jean Wiener was born in Paris in 1896 and Jean-Joel Barbier was born in Belfort, east of France in 1920. Jean Wiener was one of the earliest "Satists" and Satie himself considered him one of the finest interpreters of his music. In 1925, on July 1, Erik Satie died. It was Jean Wiener who had gotten him his room in the Grand Hotel. Weiner remembers: "Pleuresy robbed Erik Satie of all his strength. He died a very quiet, very strange, very sensitive, very entertaining, very good man. It took him four months to die under our sad eyes, without ever ceasing to smile. Indeed, humor was his hobby and music his profession. Not the other way." In 1936, Jean-Joel Barbier arrived in Paris and decided to dedicate his entire life to music. In 1965, he is Read more awarded the "Grand Prix National du Disque" for his interpretation of the pieces for piano by Satie. Members of the jury were Henri Sauguet and Darius Milhaud. In 1971, Barbier and Jean Wiener issued their recordings of the complete piano pieces actually published by Satie. These performances ran completely contrary to what had up to this time been thought about the composer of Parade. Eschewing the dry and less than purposeful interpretations of the past, Barbier added slowness, and depth and melancholy to his interpretations. He proved to all who would listen that Satie was more a mystic than an eccentric. Jean Wiener died in Paris in 1982 and Jean-Joel Barbier died there in 1994. Read less
