Notes and Editorial Reviews

One evening in the autumn of 1921, Carl Nielsen telephoned his friend the Danish pianist Christian Christiansen. During the conversation Nielsen heard music by Mozart, his favorite composer, in the background. It was in fact a rehearsal of the Symphonie-Concertante for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon by members of the Royal Court Orchestra of Copenhagen. Nielsen immediately hung up the phone and set off to hear the rehearsal. After quickly becoming friends with this group of musicians, he promised to compose a Wind Quintet for them. Thus came about the famous Quintet, Op. 43, as well as the concertos for flute and clarinet. The Six Humorous Bagatelles, Op. 11 were originally composed for piano, but it is evident from this fine Read more recording that Tor Mann's adaptation for flute, two clarinets and bassoon is a complete success. Nielsen wrote the Andante lamentoso sub-titled At the Bier of a Young Artist, for the funeral of Oluf Hartmann, a young painter and the brother-in-law of a close friend of Nielsen, Viggo de Neergaard. The Neergaard family owned a beautiful residence on the island of Lolland which Nielsen frequently visited when trying to escape the hubbub of Copenhagen. He found refuge in the gardener's cottage and was able to work in leisure there. This work was performed once again at Nielsen's own funeral in 1931. Read less
