Soprano Jane Marsh is one of America's most prominent operatic sopranos. She is a graduate of the Oberlin College/Conservatory, and studied acting at the Elisabeth Holloway School. At the request of the White House, she entered the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow as the U.S. representative and became the first singer to win its Gold Medal. She debuted in Europe at Menotti's Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy as Desdemona inRead more Verdi's Otello, Thomas Schippers conducting. Her American debut was as Pamina in The Magic Flute at the San Francisco Opera. She has appeared in all the major Italian operatic centers, including La Fenice of Venice and San Carlo of Naples, the Vienna State Opera and the operas of west and east Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Madrid, as well as in festivals throughout Europe and the U.S. She has numerous television appearances to her credit, including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, the Hollywood Palace, Bing Crosby Hour, and the Bell Telephone Hour, in addition to European programs like the Hermann Prey Show in Munich. Marsh has a broad repertory ranging from the Baroque onward. One of her specialties in Hindemith's Marienleben, and she devised an innovative Rossini-Poulenc-Falla recital. She believes strongly in the importance of understanding sung texts, and was the first person to use supertitles in concert performances. She conducts master classes and is highly regarded as an interpretation coach, having made a particular study of effective body language in operatic and concert performance.
