Notes and Editorial Reviews

What is immediately striking about this album is its constellation of four so totally different Norwegian composers. You could say that they were born in different eras: in 1919 (Kvandal); 1931 (Nordheim); 1952 (Am) and 1964 (Koch), and their styles reflect all the characteristics of 20th century Norwegian music. John Kvandal, who just died in 1999, represented the late-Romantic tradition, garnished with a sprinkling of Norwegian folk music and classical modernism. From his workroom in Grotten, the government's honorary residency for artists, Arne Nordheim can survey his unique artistic accomplishments. He has created music in virtually all imaginable categories, from electronic music, orchestral, vocal and chamber works, to ballets, Read more theater music as well as music for radio and television. Between these two "greats" we find two relatively young composers who, ironically, belong to neither Kvandal's nor Nordheim's stylistic school; both Magnar Am and Dagfinn Koch are entirely unique! Am is constantly searching and is full of surprises in his curiously fascinating music. Not only is the music itself unique in Am's personal style, he makes use of unconventional and frequently humorous means of expression. Dagfinn Koch displays much of the same "irreverence" toward conventional contemporary musical expression and meditation as does Am. It is no accident that Koch is preoccupied with musical drama, where issues are presented (and solved) on-stage and the listener plays the role of observer, rather than the music acting as contemplative input in the mind of the listener.
