18th Century Christmas Music Par ExcellenceAugust 8, 2014By Henry S. (Springfield, VA)See All My Reviews"Vol. 7 in the excellent Musical Concepts series of music from what is now the Czech Republic features works that are associated with the Christmas season in Bohemia. Setting the baseline time frame around 1770, the CD's excellent notes establish a useful historical context for appreciation of this diverse and wholly captivating recording. The Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra has this music in its blood, and it delivers a performance of delicateness, lightness of texture, and sharp, focused string and wind playing. Of particular interest is the variety of musical formats which this disk contains; i.e.- sinfonias, a wind quintet, pastorellas (one of which includes bagpipes), and even 3 organ solos. Many of the Bohemian composers featured on this recording (like previous releases in the series) wound up in other parts of Europe as a result of Bohemia's incorporation into the Austrian Empire, and this may help us understand why they helped set the stage for the massive Classical Era explosion throughout the entire continent shortly afterward. All in all, a fine recording, and one I highly recommend."Report Abuse
