| "Thrilling performances by an extraordinary pianist and colleague" proclaims the great Van Cliburn as an introduction to this 2 CD set. James Mathis was born in Dallas in 1933 and by the time he was 34 years of age he had performed as soloist under many of the great conductors of the time including Barbirolli, Solti and Dorati, and given recitals in most of the major concert halls in this country and Europe. He began his studies with Dr. Paul van Katwijk who was a former conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1925-1937). Later he went to New York where he studied at Juilliard with Olga Samaroff-Stokowski and then the incomparable Rosina Lhevinne. After completing his Masters Degree at the Juilliard School, he went to study in Rome and Vienna with Carlo Zecchi, the teacher of among others John Ogden, Peter Frankl and Joseph Kalichstein. He returned to this country in 1962 and gave his Carnegie Hall debut that same year. Alan Rich wrote: "Mr. Mathis served immediate notice last night that he is someone to reckon with on his own. He chose an admirable blend of showpieces and think-pieces for his first program and - wonder of wonders - shone even more brightly in the latter works than in the former. His playing of Schubert's `little' A Major Sonata was a pure delight. His touch was light and even, his way of caressing the music's wondrous accents was totally beguiling. Rarely has this blithe masterpiece sounded so sweetly. To hear a young pianist approach this music so intelligently, so lovingly arouses new confidence in the future of such repertory." Mathis currently spends most of his time back in his native Texas devoting the bulk of his energies to teaching; sharing his love of music. | |||||
