Contemporary organ music is a rather specialized field, but it still lives on. The eclectic program performed by Kevin Bowyer includes six world premier recordings, proving the art is alive and well. Mandelion, as name for both the album and the introductory composition by John Tavener, is wholly appropriate, as it considers the changing face of organ music. Tavener's composition is more liturgical in concept (referring to the changing images of Christ through history), but it illustrates well how dramatically the use of the instrument has changed over the centuries. The power of the new Marcussen organ at Tonbridge's Chapel of St. Augustine is evident throughout the collection, notably in Patrick Gowers' Toccata and Fugue, which accentuates both the furious energy and serenity of the instrument's tone. Bower brings out the personality in each of these disparate pieces, the technique he honed as one of Britain's leading Bach performers serving him well. His command over the keyboard suggests many more exceptional recordings are still to come. |
