The works on this disc are at once both somewhat familiar and quite mysterious. In 1740, a year before Vivaldi's death and a time when his once great popularity had declined considerably, these six cello sonatas were published in Paris. They were probably written long before that, though this is not certain and only three of them exist in manuscript form. In the 19th century they became known through romanticized arrangements, which distorted their sound and form; but now, in the high tide of the early music revival, and with the Red Priest's stock rising steadily once again, they are being heard as originally intended.
