Notes and Editorial Reviews

Conductor Christopher Hogwood is not a name you would normally associate with Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber. Yet this period-performance Handel/Mozart specialist turns in surprisingly idiomatic performances of works by these great American composers. Barber's Capricorn Concerto has the strongest European antecedents, being deliberately based on the concerto grosso form. Hogwood takes to this aspect quite naturally, providing robust energy and crisp articulation. But he also brings out the lyricism always present in Barber's music.

It's more impressive how Hogwood catches the jazzy spirit and jaunty rhythms of Copland's Music for the Theater, a brilliant early work, with striking foreshadowings of John Adams near the

The original Appalachian Spring ballet was scored for 13 instruments and accordingly lacks the rich sonority and orchestral colors (especially timpani and percussion) of the later suite. However, the gains in textural transparency are remarkable--and Copland's harmonic ingenuity is no less effective in this form. Hogwood successfully conjures the music's uniquely American folk spirit, and especially its vibrant dance elements, thanks to the alert and rhythmically potent playing he gets from the Basel Chamber Orchestra. No, it's not the big-hearted embrace and energetic drive of Leonard Bernstein, but Hogwood's performances are fine realizations of the music, and well-recorded to boot. [9/13/2006]
