Notes and Editorial Reviews

Every season or two another teenage musician is put forward by the media, an eager label, or an even more eager manager as the next great violin prodigy, the worthy successor to the lineage of luminaries. Most of these youngsters have technique but no soul, marching in an endless parade of Sibelius and Tchaikovsky concertos, one performance (and performer) just like the last. In a move reminiscent of Hilary Hahn's gutsy calling card for Sony Classical--the Bach solo sonatas and partitas--BIS has unleashed Ilya Gringolts, an 18-year-old from St. Petersburg with a take-no-prisoners recital of solo works by Hindemith, Schnittke, and Ysaÿe, as well as a composition of his own. Unlike some other
Read more youthful blazes of virtuosity, he's the real deal.

This isn't even Gringolts' debut recording (he already has recorded Paganini and a duets disc with Alexandr Bulov for BIS), but it is such an exciting recital that it should bring him wider recognition. There's no question that this violinist has monster technique--just listen to the passage of Schnittke's A Paganini that begins at 9:50. Actually, the program is so challenging that just about any minute plucked out of the album is a testament to Gringolts' technical skills. But he is also a warrior of fierce and fiery emotion, with a mix of swaggering bravado and playfulness that is entirely appropriate for a boy his age. The weakest link in the recital is his own work, Sonata Bachiana, written at age 15, a pastiche of Bach and modernity with Shostakovich as the most pronounced flavor. (With the wisdom that comes with advancing age, he has recently announced that he has decided to forgo composing to concentrate his efforts on performing.)

Recorded in Sweden at Lanna church, the sound is extremely bright but not too reverberant, a nice complement for this challenging recital. It's not a program for the faint of heart, but therein lies Gringolts' beauty.
