HYMNODIA SACRA Árni Heimir Ingólfsson, cond; Carmina CCh SMEKKLEYSA SMK 74 (63:45 Text and Translation)

Imported at the same time as Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ , this recent recording offers 23 hymns from the largest surviving 18th-century Icelandic songbook, a manuscript now preserved in the national library. Containing 101 hymns, some of them unique, it was written in 1742, and the selections recorded here represent an overview of Read more the different types of compositions. The dozen singers are heard together in only a few pieces, most of the others are given to a solo singer either alone or with accompaniment from some of the five players. This is a distinctively different chamber choir, for the voices are young and fresh, delivering the music with unassuming modesty, and all the soloists, drawn from the choir, are charming. The whole effect is so subdued as to be entrancing. Separate sections of the booklet have the Icelandic and English notes on each hymn with texts (translations), mentioning the prior versions of each hymn and composers of a few of them. The deluxe packaging has a slipcase containing the jewel box and the booklet. The decision to import this label was good, for its proprietors know how to prepare impressive releases. If you enjoy choral music, do not overlook this lovely offering.
