Karel Ancerl leads three fleet and lively Mozart performances with the Czech Philharmonic sounding quite natural in its chamber orchestra mode and the soloists each delivering very respectable interpretations. Of the two pianists, Hugo Steurer has the lighter touch--his playing in the "Jeunehomme" concerto is all of smoothness and refinement, but not without a hint of playfulness in the first movement's development and in most of the finale. Halina Czerny-Stefanska has a bigger sound for Concerto No. 23, somewhat reminiscent of Horowitz in his late recording with Giulini. However, Czerny-Stefanska is less the romantic, instead using her big, sonorous sound to underpin the music's tonal contours and harmonic tension. The piano's close perspective may have something to do with how the soloist comes across, but otherwise the mono recordings for both concertos give a decent impression of piano and orchestra in a shared acoustic.

Horn Concerto No. 3 was recorded in stereo, and right away the extra sonic dimension brings a welcome sense of solid placement, even as Miroslav Štefek's horn resounds throughout the reverberant Rudolfinium. It's a bold, sure sound that reflects Štefek's confident and purposeful way with the music, from the elegant melodies of the first two movements to the finale's exuberant hunting calls. Throughout, Ancerl provides vigorous yet also sensitive direction, drawing alert and stylish playing from the Czech musicians. A real treat for Ancerl fans and Mozart connoisseurs alike.
