Notes and Editorial Reviews

Howard Hersh writes attractive, timbrally inventive music in an approachable post-minimalist idiom that should pose few problems to listeners interested in contemporary music. The Pony Concerto, scored for flute/piccolo, clarinet, piano, violin, and cello, has a typically new-age/pacifist sort of program (second movement: "From His Starry Field, Pony Watches Bombs Fall) that has absolutely nothing at all to do with the sound of the piece; but once you get past this silly conceit you can enjoy the music on its own abstract terms. I do wish composers would go back to the good old habit of saying nothing about their proximate inspiration or ideas and let their talent do the talking for them.

Violinist William Barbini and percussionist David Carlisle deserve a great deal of credit for delivering a performance of consistently sustained momentum and character. Braided River Nights, for alto flute and marimba, is a cool nocturne that runs the greatest risk of monotony given the forces in play; but there's no question that in writing for these instruments Hersh knew what he was getting into and made the most of the opportunity. In short, these are lovely performances of music well worth hearing, and the sonics are excellent too.
