Notes and Editorial Reviews

CARMINA GALLICA • Antoine Guerber, dir; Diabolus in Musica • ALPHA 037 (66:46 ) Songs of HILDEBERT DE LAVARDIN, PIERRE DE BLOIS, PHILIPPE LE CHANCELIER, BAUDRI DE BOURGEUIL, HILAIRE D’ORLÉANS, ADAM DE SAINT-VICTOR, ANON

A Dufay Mass recorded by this group (28:4) was cited as the ninth recording of the work, overlooking still another one by Guy Janssens that is due to be reviewed shortly. [This disc is one of] three other recent issues from a French ensemble that focuses its efforts entirely on the earliest of early music. The versatility of the group may be judged by examining each disc in turn. . . .

[This] disc consists of Latin songs of the 12th century, the period contemporary with the vernacular songs
Read more of the troubadours. Most of them are secular, along with some paraliturgical songs and two sequences that could be classed as strictly liturgical. The secular genres are conductus, rondellus, and chanson. One piece of particular interest is a planctus (lament), Gloria si mundi, for Guillaume VIII of Aquitaine, the father of the first troubadour, by Baudri de Bourgeuil, the prior of the monastery that gives him his name and later archbishop of a see in Britanny. Most of these composers are clerics in the time of evolution from Latin to vernacular, from church to court. The ensemble is careful to use only the fiddle for accompaniment, two different fiddles actually, with percussion added in only two songs. The full ensemble joins in rarely, most of the songs rendered solo, with or without accompaniment. This program can be heard as a prelude to the troubadour and then to the trouvère repertoire. . . .

Each of [this group's] three discs gathers together a discrete portion of medieval music, and realizes it very effectively.
