Notes and Editorial Reviews

There's little left to say about Richard Tauber's operetta recordings except to warn people on low-cholesterol diets that a full hour of listening could be dangerous to their health as well as beneficial to their spirits. Tauber's light but firm tenor was made for these delicious pieces, which are enlivened by his dazzling tone, impeccable sense of rhythm, and mastery of the rubato so essential to the Viennese idiom. His lilting way with the waltzes is irresistible. Just try his version of Lehar's "Lippen Schweigen" from The Merry Widow or his signature tune, Sieczynski's "Wien, du stadt meiner traüme", to hear his magic. Another Tauber trademark was the crooning half-voice, heard here in two "whispering" Read more songs, and inserted for effect in numerous others. Another tune inseparable from the Tauber image, Lehar's "Dein ist mein ganzes herz" from Das Land des Lachelns, is heard in both German and English ("You are my heart's delight", from The Land of Smiles). Tauber's English, by the way, is remarkable for its excellent diction, though liberally sprinkled with "zis" and "zat".

Recorded between 1928 and 1939, these selections capture Tauber at the height of his powers, but--and there always is a "but", isn't there?--David Lennick's transfers detract from enjoyment. As in several other of his Naxos projects, including the otherwise worthy Jazz Legends releases, unobtrusive surface noise is eliminated at the cost of tonal balances and overtones that make the music live and breathe. In Tosti's "La serenta", Tauber sounds honky, as if he's singing into a horn, and the one thing Tauber was not was honky. Also, the mediocre orchestras almost disappear at times in these transfers. Sonics aside, Tauber is a singer not to be missed, especially at the Naxos price; so this CD, aptly titled Richard Tauber Favorites Vol. 1, makes us eagerly anticipate Volume 2.
