Excellent Early Polyphony! November 28, 2011
| By Christian Withers (San Antonio, TX) -- See All My Reviews | |||||
| Includes works from the Notre Dame School, which used more complex compositional techniques than previous music. Before this time, music was essentially monophonic (a single melodic line with little else than a pedal drone, doubling at the 4th or 5th or occasional embellishments). The Notre Dame composers began to experiment with additional lines, usually rhythmically active, over a slow-moving bass. There are also excellent recordings of this type of music from the Hilliard Ensemble and on Naxos, but I prefer this one slightly, because the otherwise a capella voices are accompanied by sparse instrumentation, such as finger cymbals.
