Notes and Editorial Reviews

Kaleidoscope is comprised of an intriguing collection of pieces for violin and piano, most of them being world-premiere recordings. Although these compositions stem from the late 20th century, almost all of them incorporate a neo-romantic idiom.
Irene Britton Smith's Sonata for Violin and Piano brings Brahms to mind; it has the thick-textured essence of Brahms but with just a flavor of French impressionism. Dorothy Rudd Moore's 'Three Pieces' is more austere but a striking work nonetheless for its spiky dissonances and tritone harmonies. The solo violin standout is Lettie Beckon Alston's 'Pulsation,' a fascinating work not simply for its two-note motive that represents a human heart beat but for its sparseness and buzzing effects. This
Read more is an overlooked work that ought to be a staple for violinists everywhere.
Solo piano works are best represented on this release by Valerie Capers' two selections from her 'Portraits in Jazz': "Cool-trane," a brief, bluesy yet spirited tribute to John Coltrane; and 'Billie's Song,' a tender and wistful ballad in memory of Billie Holiday. All of these works receive thoughtful and committed performances, and are warmly recommended for all music lovers in pursuit of neglected chamber works from the 20th century. Read less
