Notes and Editorial Reviews

For Elisabeth Hongen, there was no such thing as a "minor role:" even the smallest one grew, thanks to her great personality. Her mezzo-soprano voice had a rather bright timbre and possessed great expressiveness. She had no vocal problems either in the high range or the low. One need only listen to her recording of Eboli's aria - how easily she clears the obstacles of that formidable piece. Her voice was not extremely rich in timbre, but her intelligence and musicality made listeners forget that circumstance. A tone was never an end in itself, it always expressed an emotion. It was logical that Elisabeth Hongen would turn her talent to art song and oratorio. Her recital programs were chosen with great care. She performed not only the Read more standard repertoire, but also so-called modern compositions, among them music by Schoenberg, Ravel, Frank Martin, Berg and Hans Erich Apostel. Read less
