Hindemith was not a particularly great conductor, and the Berlin Philharmonic of the 1950s was a pale shadow of the ensemble that it later became under Karajan, but there are insights here that more than signal the importance of these recordings for collectors. Hindemith's no-nonsense approach certainly suits his own music even if he tends to pull back from the more grandiose climaxes (such as at the end of the Symphonic Dances). But his swift and light opening movement of the same work is aptly bracing, as is the very slow tempo for the chorale at the beginning of Mathis der Maler. Modern conductors really should pay attention to Hindemith's handling of the percussion in the scherzo of the Symphonic Metamorphosis, and to the way he brings out the brilliant horn writing in the finale. Hans Otte and Monique Hass make sympathetic soloists in The Four Temperaments and the Concert Music Op. 49, though the brass playing in the Concerto for Orchestra and Die Harmonie der Welt has been trumped many times over. All things considered, it's something of a miracle that DG made these important recordings available again. The mono sound is clear and cohesive, lacking in bass focus but otherwise perfectly acceptable and certainly listenable. The climaxes of Die Harmonie der Welt sound a bit congested, but then that's a common fault on more modern recordings too. Hindemith's star seems to be on the wane at present, but he was a major composer and hearing this set only reinforces the increasingly positive impression that his music makes as time goes on. Grab it while you can. --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com |
