Notes and Editorial Reviews

The German music critic Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt commented in 1982 on Jochum's seriousness as a musician: "The devout Jochum was never inclined to external business. The word "star" cannot be used for him. But he found everywhere that his musicianship attained approval and recognition." Jochum's performances gained fluidity primarily as a result of a liberal use of tempo modifications. The variation of tempo in his best performances achieves a sense of seamless motion due to the conductor's fine control of those variations. As Jochum aged, his variations became ever more subtle and his interpretations took on a sense of Olympian calm. Jochum's repertoire concentrated on the great German classics. Best known for his Bruckner Read more interpretations, his co-repertoire also included Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. The present collection of broadcast performances from the Central German Radio Archive (DRA) provides significant additions to Jochum's discography. Read less
