When she recorded a complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas in 2011 -- a prodigious undertaking for any pianist -- HJ Lim was the youngest person (age 24 at the time) to do so up until then. She had performed them all the previous year in a series of Paris recitals. She herself, at the age of 12, had decided to move to France from South Korea to further her music studies, where her teachers included Marc Hoppeler and Henri Barda. Lim did notRead more play in her homeland publicly until 2013. In the meantime, as a way to show her parents what she had been doing, she posted videos to YouTube and gained something of a following, as many other pianists of the time were doing. EMI Classics signed her and issued the Beethoven set. It first released the digital form, with a box set out later, to gain a younger audience, and this worked: the recording debuted at number one on several classical music charts. Lim has performed many challenging works from the literature, by composers such as Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin. After the Beethoven release, she began performing with major orchestras and in recitals in Europe, New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and São Paulo, among other places. Lim's second EMI release, (now Warner Classics), from 2013, features music by Ravel and Scriabin. Read less
