Notes and Editorial Reviews

Shortly after the publication of the first volume of Lore-Ley for mixed choir, we began receiving a lot of inquiries for such a collection for women’s and girl’s choirs. Soon, a sequel, Lore-Ley II, was published with over 130 lieder for this scoring. The Pfälzische Kurrende, under the direction of Carola Bischoff – a two-time winner of the German choral competition – has now recorded 29 of these Volkslieder (folk song) classics. Many of these arrangments by well-known contemporary composers were specially written for this collection and are recorded here for the first time. In addition to examples with classical harmony there are selections with modern elements of style, also in a light, jazzy manner. The CD should stimulate the singing of Read more folk songs and offer choral conducters an aural impression of these choral collections already published. Read less

Entrancing performance April 25, 2012 By james oppenheimer (Hyde Park, NY) See All My Reviews "It appears that this CD is a sort of demo for the content of a book of folksong settings for Women's voices. It is absolutely superb in several respects:
It is a gathering of some of the well known Folksongs of the German language and musical tradition.
The settings are very imaginative and well done, by skilled musicians, many of them well known in their own right.
The singers are consistently on the mark, with nearly flawless intonation. Generally the sense of musical style is also fine.
The director obviously has done her homework to get the ensemble fully at home with each of the settings.
There is hardly anything I can say as criticism. In one or two (brief) instances, the altos sing in a range too low for the volume asked of them. I would have had the entire ensemble sing more piano, allowing the altos to sing in a less forced manner. However, this is a minor matter, especially when compared with the overall superb job all have done here."
