Notes and Editorial Reviews

Lys over Lolland (Light over Lolland) is an independent cultural institution and since 1997 it is also the name of an annual art festival at Reventlowparken at the Pederstrup estate on Western Lolland. The beautiful park and the surroundings are used as the setting for contemporary art exhibitions, concerts, theatre and cultural events of the highest quality which combine local and international themes. In 1999, one of the topics at Lys over Lolland was German art, and Gunter Grass was invited as a guest artist. The original idea was to create an opera based on one of Grass' works for that occasion. But while the participation of Gunter Grass was a success in 1999, the opera production had to be postponed to the year 2000. The opera "Die Read more Rattin" was created by composer Gunner Moller Pedersen, and the staging as performance theater - an "Operformance" - was put in the hands of Theater Cantabile 2 and its director Nullo Facchini. A large, old barn at the Pederstrup estate served as a spectacular opera house, and the world premiere, attended by Gunter Grass, was a great success. This recording of the opera includes the original performers who made the premiere such a success. Read less
