Notes and Editorial Reviews
Happy Blue: Two bass players cheerfully switching between top and bottom lines. One of them in his full maturity - Michel Donato who has a forty-year career behind him - and the other a newcomer - Guillaume Bouchard, barely thirty years old; both of them French Canadians who have thrown a bridge across the Atlantic... Michel Donato defines the bassist as the player who provides the secure base that enables his colleagues to launch into their improvisations. And how does one go about creating that security? What happens when two bass players get together for a duet session? Less is more! They have to provide all the combinations themselves - melodies, harmonies, rhythms and sounds. While one climbs towards the instrument's ceiling, shaping the melody with those deep tones rich in harmonics, the other creates the security for his partner, enabling him to build on firm foundations. Michel even recorded a CD for solo double bass on label bleu in 1996, 'Maree Bass...e', in which he became his own bassist. Guillaume chose gut strings for this CD: 'The sound is warm and mellow, with more harmonics, and the bounce off the string really swings.' Read less
