Notes and Editorial Reviews

Following on their impressive debut in "Bella domna" (Hyperion CD CDA66283, 6/88), the ensemble Sinfonye now present a neatly balanced recording of Provençal and French monophonic songs from around 1200. Their title "The Courts Of Love" well echoes the contents: the songs give a well thought-out and rounded picture of the attitudes represented by these courts—whether real or imaginary.

The repertory they have chosen is refreshingly unusual. I think only the deservedly ubiquitous Calenda mava is at all well known; and that is presented in a gentle, courtly manner very different from what you usually hear. Moreover they show that songs such as the anonymous Lan qui dii qamons or Giraut de Bornelh's
Read more Sieus queir consell both merit firm places in the repertory.

Mara Kiek sings with a wonderful variety of colours and articulation, putting across the texts with an evidently refined understanding of their shades of meaning. In S'ieus queir she manages to characterize the two participants in the dialogue without any apparent exaggeration, though you would probably be hard put to guess that the glorious dawn-song S'anc fuy be/ha is also a dialogue.

As on their earlier record, the main weight of the instrumental playing falls on Stevie Wishart, who produces powerful and well-modulated sounds, particularly on the fiddle. Jim Denley's drumming is often an abject-lesson in how to achieve effects with the minimum of means. Paula Chateauneuf's lute and Bonnie Shaljean's harp appear less often, but work gloriously together in S'ieus queir. I am not sure whether it is a good thing to have quite so much purely instrumental playing: only six of the songs listed above are actually sung; and all that survives of this music is melodies for singing. But the relaxed vitality of the playing is invariably attractive.
