In this chamber program primarily featuring wind instruments, Rota comes across as a close Southern relative of Francis Poulenc. The Toccata for Bassoon and Piano bubbles along in the French fashion, as does the finale of the Clarinet Trio, which even sports a deliberate “wrong note” in its opening theme. These sunny, joyous pieces may lack the subtle ironic undertone that gives Poulenc’s work a certain air of detachment, but it is no mean feat to write genuinely innocent music and Rota pulls it off. The Improviso for Violin and Piano has a virtuosic swagger to it, while the Clarinet Sonata plumbs greater depths in its lyrical slow movement. Rota’s familiar film-score style in all its simplicity and sparkle is reduced to the bare essentials in these duo and trio settings. The odd piece out is the Fantasia in G for solo piano. Heavier in texture and less memorable melodically, it is a skillful but unnecessary imitation of a 19th-century ballade.

Performances are excellent, particularly Gojevic’s smooth clarinet; he knows how to capture the Italianate warmth that permeates the composer’s writing. Recording is clean, bright, and open, like the music itself.

A HIDDEN GEM November 28, 2013 By Floyd S Watson (Escondido, CA) See All My Reviews "I am sure most of us are familiar with the film music of Nino Rota, music such as the theme from The Godfather, etc. This recording of his serious music is quite a lovely gem for anyone's library. The Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano is contemporary in feel, yet with nice melodies mixed in so it is not too hard to understand. The piece I especially liked the most was the Toccata for Bassoon. This is a really fun piece, and in my opinion worth the price of the CD. Pick this recording up if you have a chance. The music is great, the performers are first class, and the price is right!" Report Abuse
