Notes and Editorial Reviews

The debut recording from the newly formed Glass Chamber Players - a group of virtuoso soloists including Artistic Director and cellist Wendy Sutter, violinists Tim Fain and Maria Bachmann, violists Misha Amory and David Harding, and cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach. This first recording by the group pairs the prima facie unlikely combination of Schoenberg's 1899 masterpiece Verklaerte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for string sextet, with Glass' four-movement Symphony No.3 transcribed for String Sextet. Schoenberg's work is treated here to an incredibly subtle reading by the GCP, and the Glass show's the group's expertise in having a relationship to a living composer. This recording was made at the Baryshkikov Arts Center in New York in the Winter of Read more 2009 and represents the first of a series of recordings pairing Philip Glass' music with masterpieces of the classical repertoire.
