Giorgio Koukl, composer, pianist and harpsichordist, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1953, where he studied at the State Music School and Conservatoire. | Giorgio Koukl, composer, pianist and harpsichordist, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1953, where he studied at the State Music School and Conservatoire. In 1968 he moved to Switzerland and continued his studies at both the Conservatories of Zürich and Milan (Italy), including masterclasses of Nikita Magalov, Jacques Fèvrier, Rudolf Firkusny and Stanislav Neuhaus. Koukl has been the prizewinner of many international music competitions, including those of Ciudad Ibaguè (Colombia), Tolosa (Spain), Viotti (Italy), the H. Rahn competition (Switzerland), and the Aliènor Competition (Washington D.C.). Koukl is an active recitalist, concerto soloist, and collaborative pianist in chamber music performances with groups such as The Prague National Theatre Wind Quintet. His compositions have received first performances in many major European cities, in Asia, and in the United States. As performer and a composer, Koukl has been frequently broadcast, primarily in Europe. Koukl is also a member of Mensa International. He has recorded for ALI (Prague), Da Camera (Mannheim), Nuova Era (Torino), Altri Suoni (Lugano), Dynamic (Genova), and Gasparo (USA). His compositions are published by Lux Nova Press (Decatur, Georgia, USA) and Alfieri e Ranieri Publishing (Palermo, Sicily, Italy). In addition to recording his own works for Gasparo, Koukl is recording the complete piano music of Bohuslav Martinu for Naxos. |
