Notes and Editorial Reviews

The soloists are formidable: Elly Ameling and Maurice André sparkle, Agnes Giebel's fine intuition and technique make a haunting interpretation, and Kurt Equiluz leads the field in matters of style.

Winschermann's approach to the cantatas is conservative; his tempos are usually well chosen, though sometimes a little on the slow side, and his phrasing inclines towards that smooth legato so much favoured by Helmuth Rilling... Cantatas Nos. 147 and 74...were issued in 1972 and I think, on balance, they are the two which best illustrate the strong points of Winschermann's approach. In Cantata No. 74, especially, there is some fine obbligato playing from the violinist, Saschko Gawriloff, from Don Smithers (trumpet),
Read more and from Winschermann himself (oboe da caccia). The soprano, Ileana Cotrubas, has a vocal colour which suits the music very well...

Elly Ameling and Maurice André are both on sparkling form in Cantata No. 51, "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen"; I should have preferred a crisper approach to the opening movement but that is clearly not Winschermann's view of the piece. The finale trips along delightfully, in a nicely-judged tempo. The earliest of the recordings, dating from 1968, is of Cantata No. 151. It opens with a delicately scored lullaby in 12/8 for the new-born Christ. Agnes Giebel is the soloist and, although her voice was then past its best, her fine intuition and technique make this a haunting interpretation... Julia Hamari, Kurt Equiluz and Hermann Prey make a formidable team [in Cantatas 128 and 134] with Equiluz leading the field in matters of style...

...BWV191 [is] Bach's Latin Feast Music for Christmas Day. Its music belongs to the Gloria of the Mass in B minor, but the use of Latin words for a work intended for the Leipzig liturgy is unique amongst Bach's cantatas... It's a lively interpretation, as it ought to be... A welcome issue...

Por que está descatalogado??? August 1, 2012 By N. Luis (Capital Federal, Buenos Aires) See All My Reviews "Esta magnifica serie de Cantatas de Bach está descatalogada, como muchas otras grabaciones. " Report Abuse
