Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sergei Rachmaninoff barely had time to compose after settling in the United States in 1918, such was his success as a pianist. Corelli had given his sonata the dance genre title "La Follia." The theme, borrowed originally from an old Spanish folk tune, appeared repeatedly in musical history, for example in Vivaldi, Bach and Liszt. Rachmaninoff structured his variations with almost classical transparency. He dedicated the composition to Fritz Kreisler who had introduced him to the "Corelli Theme." On October 12, 1931, Rachmaninoff gave a concert in Montreal where he premiered Read more his new Corelli Variations. Roland Degoumois is a Swiss pianist who was born in 1969. Read less
