Soprano Neva Pilgrim is a great champion of contemporary music and each of her recitals is a fascinating journey into this under performed vocal repertoire. This disc features songs and song cycles by some of the most provocative composers of our age. Ernst Krenek composed over 200 works in a variety of styles, his 'Trois Chansons,' Op.30a, set to poetry of Emile Verhaeren, is scored for soprano, clarinet and string quartet. Pilgrim sang in the U.S. premiere of the work and it's clearly a piece she has mastered. Her dark-hued voice shimmers against the accompaniment as she brings something exotic and mysterious to these works. On a much larger scale is R. Murray Schafer's 'Requiem for the Party-Girl.' The work is a cycle of connected arias documenting the mental collapse and suicide of a young woman. The piece is a frightening and brilliantly conceived portrait of despair that rivals Schoenberg's 'Erwartung.' Pilgrim delivers a tour de force, shifting from long passages of hypnotic sprechstimme to full voice singing. This is a challenging and rewarding exploration of contemporary vocal music.
