Notes and Editorial Reviews

It is perhaps invidious that this collection of Irish cathedral anthems - the first of its kind - should contain so much music not written by native-born Irish composers. Yet, until parliamentary acts united the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801, practically all notable musicians serving in Irish cathedrals were imported from England. The large salaries offered at both Dublin's Anglican cathedrals continued to attract singing men from England until 1900 and beyond. The Victorian period, however, saw a growth of indigenous talent, on this disc illustrated by the music of Joseph Robinson and Sir Robert Stewart, while in the 20th century much important work has been done by Irishmen working in England such as Stanford, Wood and Read more Andrews. In recent years, the repertoire of the Church of Ireland has been enlarged not only by contributions from its own organists but also through the commissioning of new works from composers both Irish and English. This disc presents therefore, a varied, historical selection of music with Irish connections, in which widely known names rub shoulders with others much less familiar. Read less
