Notes and Editorial Reviews

"I gave the original issue what was probably my most enthusiastic review yet; virtually everything seemed entirely as it should be, and everything breathed a kind of musical genuineness that communicated in a very special way...the only change in my feelings is a deeper appreciation of several songs that were then unfamiliar. One is the little Ma seul amour by Briquet: the Editor might well ask ''Who he?'' and the only answer is in these few bars of music, but they are magical all the same, and characteristic of the best, the most refined, from the early fifteenth century. Another is Anthonello's complex Amour m'a le cuer which so amply repays the kind of repeated and detailed listening that CD makes possible. There is also Amour n'ont Read more cure de tristesse by Francus de Insula; yet another case for ''Who he?'', but here at least there is just a little more music to go alongside this perfect piece with its opening roulade so enticingly sung by Margaret Philpot. But the point I am making is simply that the lesser known songs put alongside works of Dufay and Landini are superbly chosen and help to illuminate new aspects of the secular song tradition around 1400."
