Notes and Editorial Reviews

CODEX CHANTILLY • Laurence Brisset, dir; De Caelis • AEON AECD 1099 (64:21 Text and Translation)

Music of SOLAGE, VAILLANT, JACOB DE SENLECHES, EGIDIUS DE AURELIA, GRIMACE, BORLET, GACIAN REYNEAU

"Codex Chantilly is a collection of mostly French songs of the late 14th century copied between 1408 and 1420, with a bifolio (or perhaps two single folios) of two songs by Baude Cordier added at the front a little later. The style is Ars Subtilior, the mannerist music of the period between Machaut and Dufay. Three years ago a color facsimile was published by Brepols at Turnhout for about $350. There are 113 songs (including two duplicates), but only 76 have ever been recorded. CDs devoted mostly or entirely to
Read more this repertoire include Ce diabolique chant (Fanfare 7:5; CD recently issued), Codex Chantilly (11:2), Ars Magis Subtilior (13:1, CD in 13:4), Balades a iii Chans (19: 2), Fleurs de vertus (Arcana), Ars Subtilior” (Linn), The Unknown Lover (30:4), and Corps Femenin (34: 2). The songs and their composers are important in the period, including Trebor, Suzoy, Caserta, Hasprois, Cunelier, and Royllart, in addition to those listed on this disc. The new disc includes 16 songs, of which three are first recordings. The 13 duplicated songs include five found on The Unknown Lover, three on Pérès’s Codex Chantilly, three on Ars Subtilior, and three on Ars Magis Subtilior. Two of the most popular songs in the codex, “Par maintes foy” and “Fumeux fume,” are both included. The singing by five women is exquisite, occasionally joined unobtrusively by harp or organetto in half a dozen songs. Six selections are ballades, the fixed form most represented in the codex with 70 examples. If you have already acquired all eight discs listed earlier, you would already have 56 pieces, half of the entire codex. Even if you have a good selection of the previous discs, you will want to add this to your collection. Only The Unknown Lover, the fine Solage set that is duplicated here by five of its 12 pieces, is much competition to this one. None of the other discs mentioned use a women’s ensemble; all are mixed voices except Pérès’s all-male Codex Chantilly and Philip Pickett’s Ars Subtilior, which features Catherine Bott with instruments. In that respect, it does not duplicate any of them. This is a lovely disc."
