| Trombone in Europe was conceived as a guide to the progress of the trombone as a solo instrument in Europe during the past decades. This route spans from the compositions of Martin and Hindemith, both of which evolved under the impression of war, followed by the seemingly light-hearted, post-war works of Serocki and Defaye, and leads to the two most interesting contributions from our own time, Denisov and Gunes. The latter two works represent an especially promising development in new music, since conventional playing techniques are employed without the imitation of traditional works. Thus Denisov, for example, challenges the listener to acute listening through his great variety of sounds, whereas Gunes, with his meaningful tonal language, arouses feelings of basic musical instinct. Incidentally, it may be noticed that the range of the alto trombone, from its lowest possible note, has been extended to four octaves - truly a world innovation. In this recording, the trombone generally utilizes an abnormally wide tonal range for a wind instrument - that of four and one half octaves. If the use of quarter and eighth tones is taken into account, a wealth of possibilities result, which will hopefully aid in encouraging composers to use the trombone more extensively as a solo instrument than ever befo | |||||
