Notes and Editorial Reviews

Since the 19th century days of Negro Minstrels, the banjo has always enjoyed a strong following, especially in fields of Traditional Jazz and Country Music. Yet while Country greats such as Uncle Dave Macon and Earl Scruggs are familiar, the names of so many virtuosi of the instrument are nowadays largely forgotten. 'Ring, Ring De Banjo' is intended to put that right by turning the spotlight onto a series of remarkable musicians, all of whom excelled at the banjo. Here is a panoramic overview of banjo soloists from both sides of the Atlantic. There are American early groundbreakers Vess Ossman (whose 'Mosquitos' Parade' dates from 1902!), Fred Van Eps and Olly Oakley, followed by a string of great artists such as harry Reser (Crackerjax...) Read more and Eddie Peabody (an amazing 'Rhapsody in Blue'...). British artists also feature, with Mike Ortuso, Tarrant Bailey Jr. and Emile Grimshaw among the talents on show. Included too are bands such as The Banjo Kings and 'Raymonde' Band of Banjoes'. The repertoire covers the plantation songs of such as Stephen Foster, ragtime and popular and novelty numbers.
