This is, I suppose, technically crossover but I don’t actually care. Between the Knots is a musical collective consisting of Matthew Barley, cello and director, Paul Griffiths, guitar, Fraser Trainer, keyboards, Sam Walton, percussion, and Peter Whyman, winds. Guest artist Viktoria Mullova plays on the mini concerto for violin and ensemble,
Knots, and the arrangement of Human League’s 1980s hit,
Love Action. Trainer’s music will remind you a bit of a less punchy Steve Martland (remember him?). The two pieces that are by the entire group,
Lucky and
Tangerine Dance , have obvious

similarities since, of course, Fraser Trainer was part of the composition process. The music also has similarities to that of Fleshquartet, who provided the music for
The Appartement that made my Want List last year. I suppose one could consider this a more rock-oriented version of Kronos, with a more diverse instrumentation, right down to the dance-hit encore. In any case, I enjoyed it enormously and recommend it without reservation.
