 Great Electro-Acoustic Album June 4, 2013 By Alan F. See All My Reviews "An album that presents 3 works that mix electric and acoustic music in an enjoyable and maybe even accessible way. First - a brief description... Listening to it before reading the liner notes, the first piece sounded like a complex, ever-changing drum solo with somewhat of a techno beat alongside it. After learning that 'A Different Kind of Tension' is actually a pre-existing track of electronic sounds and rhythms, with percussionist/composer David Hildebrandt playing over this track, my perception changed a bit. The title track forms the majority of the album - 38' - and is a collection of musical ideas that are played out in both the acoustic instruments and the electronics. The work moves between sounds worlds; some sections are nebulous and free, and some are driving and rocking forward. The liner notes indicate that 'Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms' might be the darkest work on the album, and this is probably true. Without reading the notes, I never would have realized it was an electronic remix (by Bretschneider) of an acoustic orchestral piece by Kanding. I've heard a variety of electro-acoustic music, but this is the first CD I've heard of 'art music' that sounds more like house music. That is to say, it's electronic music by a well- respected new music ensemble that has a beat. To be honest, 'Auxiliary Blue' is my favorite work because it does not have a steady rhythm throughout the whole work. On the whole - a great CD that I'm happy to own. It actually has the unique potential to introduce more techno- or house-music-minded listeners to the current world of 'classical' musicians and their (I should say 'our' as I am one of them) incorporation of electronics with acoustic instruments."
