Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Acteon receives an exemplary performance (on Harmonia Mundi HM 1095. 5/83) from the Arts Florissants ensemble directed by William Christie (who plays one of the two continuo harpsichords in the Cesti). After a hunting overture that breaks away from the Lully pattern, the brutal mythological story is presented in six short scenes that include several striking choruses and are rich in melodic invention: Acteon's "sleep scene" (a traditional element of the Lullian tragedie-lirique) and the final chorus of mourning by his fellow-hunters are especially memorable. The alto Dominique Visse, in the title-role, skilfully changes his vocal timbre when Actaeon is turned into a stag—not so much, a vengeful Juno reveals, because he had chanced to see Diana bathing as because he is descended from Europa, with whom Juno's consort Jupiter had dallied.
