Gladys Swarthout was born on Christmas Day in Deepwater, Missouri. She was trained in the Bush Conservatory in Chicago and later by the conductor, Leopoldo Mugnone. She made her debut at the Chicago Opera in 1924; in 1925 at Ravinia and her debut at the Met in 1929. She sang in the world premiere performances of Howard Hanson's "Merry Mount" and Deems Taylor's "Peter Ibbetson." Over the years, she gradually reduced her operatic performances and established herself from around 1940 on as one of America's leading concert singers and lied-interpreters. "That is where the real money was," she once openly confessed. Serious heart problems which, until then, had never been noticed, forced her to end her career in 1954.
